Ukrainian Foreign Minister calls for the EU to impose sanctions against Gerhard Schroder

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Pavel Klimkin, considers it is necessary to impose sanctions against former German Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, as he stated to Bild newspaper.

"It is important to impose sanctions against those involved in promoting Putin’s projects abroad. Gerhard Schröder is the most important lobbyist for Putin in the world. This is why the European Union should evaluate their action in this situation," Deutsche Welle quoted the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying.

The editorial office of The Wall Street Journal also wonders how Gerhard Schröder has so far managed to avoid sanctions. A member of the European Parliament, Elmar Brok, agrees with the accusations against the politician.

"It is a scandal that the former German Chancellor represents Putin’s interests.  It is surprising that it has not created consequences within the public debate yet," Brok stressed.

After Schröder resigned as Chancellor of Germany in 2005, he became the Chairman of the Board of the Nord Stream project. Later the politician was appointed as chairman of the Board of Nord Stream 2 and also as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rosneft.
