Kremlin accuses the US of drone attack on the Russian base in Syria

The Russian Defense Ministry accused the US of carrying the January drone attack on the Russian Khmeimim base in Syria.

"Thirteen drones were moving in a unified assault order and operated by a single crew. At that time the American Poseidon-8 reconnaissance plane was flying over the Mediterranean Sea for eight hours” said the Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin as quoted by TASS.

According to him, the drones switched to manual guidance upon encountering Russia’s electronic countermeasures. "Manual guidance [of drones] is not performed by some peasant but by a specially equipped Poseidon aircraft. It [the reconnaissance aircraft] took over the manual guidance [of the drones]," noted the Deputy Minister.

“When these 13 drones encountered our electronic barrier, they moved a certain distance away, received commands and were controlled from space,” he said.

According to him, seven of the drones were destroyed and the others captured. This attack that Fomin reported happened on the 6th of January.
