Japan promises Ukraine $1.85 billion if Kiev successfully implements reforms

The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzō Abe, said during a joint press statement with the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, that Japan promises to provide support to Ukraine in the amount of $1.85 billion if Kiev shows pregress in implementing reforms, Ukrainian News reported.

“For our part, I have the following intention: We will keep our promises on provision of financial support to Ukraine in the amount of $1.85 billion for the implementation of reforms. The Prime Minister added that they have discussed the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Abe also reported that Japan is planning to provide 3.5 million euros to Ukraine for construction of the nuclear fuel storage in 2016. “This year marks the 30th anniversary after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. This year, we decided to provide 3.5 million Euros for construction of the storage of nuclear fuel in Ukraine,” he said.

The Prime Minister added that Japan, along with other G-7 countries (USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Japan) will support Ukraine in this area. Poroshenko stated after negotiations with the Prime Abe that Japan decided to provide $13.6 million in humanitarian assistance for the recovery of victims of hostilities in the territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

“We are grateful for Japan’s decision to provide the next tranche of humanitarian assistance in the amount of $13.6 million for restoration of eastern regions of Ukraine,” he said. The Head of State noted that Ukraine receives the largest amount of financial assistance among other countries from Japan. Previously it was reported that Ukraine and Japan were preparing to discuss the imposition of a visa-free regime.
