Russia begins preliminary designs for a 5th generation submarine

On the 4th of October, RIA Novosti reported that Russia has begun developing the preliminary design of a nuclear submarine of the fifth generation. This information was given by the Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuriy Borisov.

“With regard to the newest submarines, the pilot project of a promising fifth-generation nuclear-powered submarine is currently under development. The results of this will serve as a basis for the decision on the date of the submarine’s creation,” Borisov said during an interview with Moskovskij Komsomolets.

The United Shipbuilding Corporation had previously announced the start of work on the development of the design of Husky-class fifth-generation nuclear submarines. They will replace the Project 885 Yasen-class submarines, which are now being built and put into service by the Russian Navy.

As of now, it is only known that the new multi-purpose submarine will be made as uniformly similar as possible to the strategic nuclear submarine. It will also be armed with the hypersonic Zircon missile.
