Russian Foreign Minister: The US didn’t warn Russia about the airstrike on Assad’s forces

The United States did not warn Russia about the attack on the Syrian government forces in the south of the country which took place on May 18. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in his interview with the journalists following the session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

"We are still confirming all the details of this strike, but according to some reports, several dozen civilians have died as a result of it", said Lavrov.

The Minister said that the American command had attempted to justify the blow stating  that the Syrian government forces posed a threat to the opposition forces "who are cooperating with the American military".

According to Lavrov the actions of the United States were illegal and blatantly violated the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic.

He also noted that “common understanding of the need to combine efforts against terrorists from Jabhat al-Nusra is being lost”.

The United States carried out an airstrike on the Syrian government forces on May 18, as reported by Reuters.

Several people were reportedly killed as a result of the strike. The coalition attacked Assad’s forces when they were heading for the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria, along the border with Iraq and Jordan. The base is used by the US military. According to American officials, the attack occurred after Syrian troops had ignored warning shots by a US aircraft.
