Ukrainian Parliament is urging the world to condemn Russia’s ban of Crimean Tatar Mejlis

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has appealed to international organizations and parliaments not to recognize the decision of the Russian courts to ban the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars. The Ukrainian parliamentarians are also requesting to consider the possibility of imposing sanctions against the judges who made the verdict. A total of 248 deputies voted in favor of this decision on the 5th of October.

The Ukrainian Parliament called for measures that “will indicate the non-recognition and condemnation of the decision to ban the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people”. The Verkhovna Rada is also asking the UN Security Council, the Human Rights Council and other authorized UN bodies to review the situation with the prohibition of the work of the Mejlis, and to take action to protect the rights of the Crimean Tatars.

The Verkhovna Rada called on the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Parliament to adopt resolutions condemning the prohibition of the work of the Mejlis.

On the 26th of April, the Russian Supreme Court of the Crimea identified the Mejlis as an extremist public organization and banned its activities in Russia.

On the 29th of September, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation finalized the decision by upholding the ban on the activities of the Mejlis, and also recognized them as an extremist organization in Russia.
