Polish deputy foreign minister to become new ambassador to Ukraine

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Bartosz Cichocki is to become his country’s new ambassador to Ukraine, Polish President Andrej Duda announced, as cited by Wpolityce

“The proposal is for Cichocki, who is deputy minister of foreign affairs, to take this post, so that this is effectively a reinforcement of this political representation, and also, of course, a reinforcement of relations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Duda explained.

He noted that presidential elections are approaching in Ukraine, and that this means “an extremely busy season”.

News came out on December 19 that Polish Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Peklo was being recalled. His term comes to an end on January 31, 2019.

“There have been various reasons, perhaps you remember that this was a request made of me by the minister of foreign affairs, and so my decision on this matter was a response to a specific request,” the Polish president said.

Cichocki is a historian by education. He has worked as an analyst in the Center for Eastern Studies, the Polish Institute of International Affairs, and the National Security Bureau. Between 2015 and 2016, he worked at the Polish Embassy to Moscow, after which he returned to Warsaw to become the advisor to the chief of intelligence. Since 2017, he has resumed working in the Foreign Ministry, where he is responsible for eastern policy.

Since the start of August 2016, the Polish Ambassador to Ukraine has been the publicist Jan Peklo, director of the Polish Ukrainian Cooperation Foundation.
