Russia wants to replace imported aircraft engines with domestic ones

The new Russian VK-800 aircraft engine will eliminate the need for domestic manufacturers to continue purchasing foreign engines, Avia Port Executive Director Oleg Panteleev told Russian RT TV Channel.

Panteleev said that after testing, the Russian engine will be installed in L-410UPV-E20 civilian aircraft that are currently equipped with М601 and H80 engines of the Czech company, GE Aviation Czech (Walter), a subsidiary of US-based General Electric.

On March 6, the engine’s lead designer, Vitaly Loginov spoke at the Baranov Central Institute of Aviation Motor Development or CIAM, where he stated that the VK-800S turboprop engine is being completed in Russia at the OJSC Urals Civil Aviation Plant (UZGA) and at the Klimov United Engine Corporation. He also noted that aircraft that use the new engine would be certified in 2020.

Loginov also emphasized that the design commission and specialists from the CIAM certification center had already met and deliberated on the project. He added that in 2019, developers will use the Institute’s standards to conduct certification tests.
