EU puts governor of Sevastopol on sanctions list
The European Union added the "Governor" of Sevastopol, Dmitry Ovsyannikov to the sanctions list established by Resolution 269/2014 regarding "actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine." This was reported in the journal of the European Union.
"Ovsyannikov was elected the Governor of Sevastopol after elections held on September 10, 2017, organized by Russia in illegally-annexed Sevastopol,” the journal explained as the reason for imposing this latest sanction.
Ovsyannikov was appointed acting governor as early as July 2016. "He worked to further integrate the illegally annexed Crimea into Russia," the EU statement notes. According to the EU, this made Ovsyannikov responsible for the active support of actions that threaten the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
In 2017, Ovsyannikov made public statements in support of the Crimea's accession to Russia, the EU said. "He honored the memory of the veterans of the so-called ‘self-defense units’ who contributed to the deployment of Russian troops to the Crimea on the eve of the illegal annexation by Russia, and called for making Sevastopol the southern capital of Russia," the report says.
According to EU sanctions, all assets of listed individuals must be frozen until they are removed from this list.
The day after the voting on September 10, the European Union announced the non-recognition of elections in the Crimea.
