Klintsevich: Russia would have a tough response to US aggression
A recent warning by the Russian General Staff about the threat of a sudden nuclear strike on Russia is a signal to U.S. leadership that any further developments will not be a surprise, and that Russians have nothing to fear – the situation is under control, as expressed Wednesday by the First Deputy of the Federation Council on Defense and Security Committee, Franz Klintsevich, commenting on the statement of the First Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, Viktor Poznihir. Earlier, Poznihir stated that American missile defense systems allow for the possibility of a nuclear strike on Russia.
"There is no doubt that such statements have definite recipients. The first addressee is the world community. Secondly, a clear signal has been sent to the U.S. that any further developments will not come as a surprise to us. I think that this reminder will not be superfluous. Let them know that we are aware," Klintsevich’s press service quoted him as saying.
According to the deputy, at the moment, the surest guarantee of preserving peace is "our ability to respond to possible aggression in the strictest possible way." "That, first of all, as it seems to me, was what the Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces meant in making his statement," Klintsevich stressed.
The main addressee, according to the deputy, was the Russians. "They have nothing to fear: the situation is under control," the senator emphasized.
