Russian soldiers begin exercises in Abkhazia

Almost 700 servicemen of the Russian military base in Abkhazia will repel simulated enemy air attacks and simulated assaults of subversive-reconnaissance groups. TASS news agency reported on the exercise, quoting the Southern Military District’s press service.

The exercise, which involved more than 60 pieces of equipment, is being conducted in the mountains and on the coast at the Tsabal and Nagvalou training ranges.

"Particular attention in the course of exercise is paid to camouflage of firing positions and field command posts, as well as to consolidation of knowledge in tactical, reconnaissance and artillery aiming expertise. About 50% of all activities are carried out at night," the military officials in the Russian Southern Military District specified.

Soldiers will also have a tactical exercise using the live fire from BTR-82AM armored personnel carriers and other weapons.

In February, more than 500 motorized infantrymen of the Southern Military District base stationed in Abkhazia carried out instruction practice at Gudauta, Tsabal and Nagvalou ranges. It involved more than 50 units of modern military equipment, including BTR-82AM armored personnel carriers, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and KamAZ Mustang armored trucks.
