Latvia detects Russian warships near its territorial waters
The Latvian National Armed Forces has detected Russian warships in its economic zone.
"In the Latvian economic zone, at a distance of 20 nautical miles from the state border, armed forces detected a Russian warship of the Steregushchiy class, a submarine technical support vessel of Kashtan class and the Kilo class submarine," this was stated in a message on the Armed Forces of Latvia’s Twitter page.
It is worth noting that NATO counted 250 recent interceptions of Russian military aircraft in the Baltic States, though they did not break air and sea space of the states.
The Baltic countries and the UK have repeatedly stated that by the presence of aircraft at their borders, Russia demonstrates their power and tests the reaction of NATO.
The Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO, Alexander Grushko, has pointed out before that, as a result of its expansion, the Alliance moves its territory closer to Russia and Moscow cannot ignore it. "We are now seeing constant exercise, the rotation of US Forces in Europe, the deployment of heavy weapons from storage sites... The United States will also send a new brigade on a regular rotating basis to NATO. This is something that we will look at very seriously at the military planning," he said.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, has said that Russia has no grounds to be nervous about the appearance of NATO military in Latvia.
