  • Canada extends command of NATO battalion in Latvia by 4 years

    Canada has decided to extend its command of the multinational NATO battalion in Latvia by another four years.

    This was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau while visiting Riga today.

    The Canadians’ current three-year mandate will expire in spring 2019, but it will be extended by another four years, Trudeau said during a meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis.

  • Russian warships approach Latvian borders

    Ships of the Russian Armed Forces were spotted again near the Latvian border, BNS reported, referencing a report by the Latvian National Armed Forces.

    “In a special economic zone of Latvia, 12 nautical miles from the territorial waters of the country, Russian ships (SB-121 and Kashtan classes) were spotted,” the report stated. “Also, 6.5 nautical miles from territorial waters, a landing ship of the Ropucha class appeared.”

    On May 9, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs stated on Twitter that the Latvian embassy in Moscow had been attacked.

  • Latvia detects Russian warships near its territorial waters

    The National Armed Forces of Latvia detected two Russian warships near the country's borders.

    "In the Latvian exclusive economic zone, five nautical miles from territorial waters, the Naval Forces identified a Steregushchiy-class frigate of the Russian Navy on April 28,” the message of the Latvian National Armed Forces reads.

    The head of the Center for the Protection of Russian Schools, Alexander Gaponenko was arrested in Latvia, on April 21, reports Delfi news outlet.

    According to Delfi, Gaponenko is also the leader of the social movement "The Congress of Non-Citizens" in Latvia.

    Russian naval forces will conduct training launches of missiles over the Latvian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea from April 4 to 6, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, reports DELFI new agency.

  • Latvian Parliament passes bill prohibiting high schools from teaching in languages of national minorities

    The amendments to the Latvian Law on Education, involving the abolition of bilingual education in schools, have undergone the third and final reading in the Saeima or Latvian Parliament.
