Ambassadors from the Group of Seven countries called on the current president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, to ensure a smooth transition of power to his successor, Vladimir Zelensky. The publication Evropeyska Pravda cited a message from the French presidency of the G7 on Twitter when reporting the news.
“G7 ambassadors met with President Poroshenko today to discuss the progress of reforms during his presidency. They congratulated President Poroshenko on his achievements and exchanged views on how progress could be ensured in the future,” the ambassadors said. The G7 called for a smooth transition of power which would allow Ukraine to continue its chosen path to reform.”
At the same time, according to the press service of the Ukrainian president, Poroshenko called on the countries of the Group of Seven and the EU to continue supporting Ukraine. “I come to you with a request to keep supporting Ukraine, especially considering the state of its national security. Continue supporting our country on its path to reform. This is extremely important,” the president said.
He also thanked the ambassadors “for adhering strongly to the principle”: nothing about Ukraine, without Ukraine. Poroshenko stressed that Ukraine is a unifying element in the foreign policy of the G7 and the European Union, and that should stay the case in the future.
