Media: Ukraine fails to sanction 40 Russian companies from the US and EU sanctions list

The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) "forgot" to include dozens of Russian companies that are included in the sanctions list of the US Treasury, stated Ukrainian MP Svitlana Zalishchuk in her article for Ukrayinska Pravda.

According to Zalishchuk, the journalist Valentyna Samar and journalists from the Center for Journalistic Investigations noticed that forty individuals and companies involved in the annexation of the Crimea and operating in the Donbas that are included in the American lists disappeared from the Ukrainian sanction lists.

"Having learnt of such selectiveness, we asked the President for clarifications on how such a situation could arise. In response, the head of his administration "redirected us" to the NSDC,” Zalishchuk said.

The Deputy explained that the NSDC "could not come up with answers as to why 26 names were lost (we sent the request in July, later another 14 names were added) and told the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and SBU to "thoroughly examine it.’”

"Article 5 of the Law of Ukraine on sanctions clearly states that the provisions on sanctions, as well as the final decision, are the area of responsibility of the NSDC,” Zalishchuk said. "The Cabinet of Ministers decided to take initiative and proposed including those [19 Russian legal entities] involved in the construction of the Kerch Bridge. This seems to be insufficient since there are more than forty people identified by us and the journalists that the NSDC forgot to include.”

The Cabinet of Ministers concluded the sanctions list of nineteen legal entities involved in the construction of the Kerch Bridge. This list will be submitted to the NSDC for consideration.

Last July, the European Union imposed sanctions on six companies for constructing the Kerch Bridge.
