Russia is building new railroad to bypass Ukrainian territory

A double-track electrified railroad bypassing Ukraine through the Zhuravka-Millerovo area, once operational, will have the capacity for 240 passenger and freight trains per day in both directions, as was stated by the Vice President of JSC RZD Russian Railways, Oleg Toni, as reported by TASS.

"Once completed according to schedule, this railway will, over the summer, allow for 62 passenger and freight trains in both directions," he said.

According to the Vice President of the RZD, currently, 2,500 civilian contractors and 1,500 units of equipment are involved in the construction of the railway line.  Answering the question as to whether the snowy and cold winter harms the construction, the Vice President of RZD said, "It doesn’t hurt it, on the contrary, we need frosts now more than thaw. The more it frosts, the quicker we will work - and with zest.”

Toni, together with the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Bulgakov, was visiting the Voronezh region to monitor the progress of the railway to bypass Ukraine.

On 21 September 2015, the Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, signed the decree for the construction of the railway bypassing the Luhansk region of Ukraine in the Zhuravka area (Voronezh region) and the Millerovo (Rostov region) area.

The head of the Defense Ministry of Russia, Sergey Shoygu, stated that the railway bypassing Ukraine will be completed by September 2017.
