Russian lawyer of detained Crimean Tatar arrives in the peninsula to secure his release

Mark Feygin, who is the lawyer of the deputy head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Ilmi Umerov, has arrived in the Crimea. The Russian lawyer posted this on his Facebook page.

Feygin said that he is preparing for negotiations with the FSB concerning the release of Umerov from a mental hospital. He is currently undergoing a compulsory court-ordered psychiatric examination.

“I have arrived in the Crimea and together with my colleagues in Umerov’s defense team, we will try from as soon as tomorrow to get him out of the mental hospital,” Feygin said.

A FSB investigator is expected to visit Umerov in the hospital in Simferopol on the 29th of August.

Umerov’s family reported on the deterioration of his health. He lost consciousness in front of his daughter Aisha just one day after his involuntary placement in the hospital. The 59-year-old suffers from diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. He also underwent heart surgery.

The EU has called on Russia to release Umerov, who was placed in the hospital based on the decision of the Kremlin-controlled court in the Crimea.

Human Rights Watch has also called on the Russian authorities to immediately release Umerov from the hospital due to his ill health.
