U.S. Ambassador in Kyiv: Ukraine needs to establish an anti-corruption court

In an interview with Zerkalo Nedeli, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch stated that Kyiv needs to expand the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and establish an anti-corruption court.

"The wave of public indignation at corruption points to the need to preserve and expand the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau… and create an anti-corruption court as soon as possible. We are ready to support the Ukrainian government's efforts to fight corruption and are aware that the system of electronic declaration of assets is the beginning rather than the end of the process of identifying and stopping corrupt practices,” Yovanovitch stated.

Last week, Ukrainian officials submitted their electronic declarations outlining all properties and assets owned. Civil servants will have to show the origins of funds exceeding their salary, and presenting false information on these declarations will result in criminal liability.
