Poroshenko calls on Macron to intensify pressure against Russia to release Ukrainian political prisoners

The Ukrainian President’s Press Service reports that President Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron during which the two parties agreed on further contacts through the Normandy Format to ensure the implementation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement of the situation on the Donbas.

“The interlocutors discussed the security situation in the Donbas and the need for a UN peacekeeping mission throughout its occupied territory. The interlocutors congratulated the restoration of meetings in the Normandy format at the level of Foreign Ministers and agreed on further contacts in this format to ensure the implementation of the Minsk Agreements,” reported the Press Service.

The Ukrainian President, as noted, also called for "increased pressure on Russia to free all Ukrainian prisoners as soon as possible, including Oleg Sentsov, Roman Sushchenko and Volodymyr Balukh.”

Macron congratulated Poroshenko on progress in reforms, and particularly with the adoption of the Law On the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court, the statement added.

"The interlocutors also discussed preparations for the EU-Ukraine and NATO-Ukraine summits to be held in Brussels in July," the statement concluded.

In addition, the President of Ukraine invited the French President to come to Ukraine on an official visit.
