Stoltenberg: Turkey is challenging NATO by purchasing the S-400 missile systems from Russia

Turkey’s decision to purchase Russian S-400 air defense systems is a challenge for NATO, said the Alliance’s Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg.

At the Heritage Foundation seminar in Washington, Stoltenberg recalled that the S-400 is incompatible with other NATO systems and cannot be integrated into a unified network of air defense. He emphasized that Turkey has the right to make its own decisions on defense, but he also expressed the hope that a compromise can be reached.

“I hope that a solution can be found because what we see now is a challenge for everyone. There are disagreements over Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 missile systems,” Stoltenberg added. He called Turkey “a very important ally” of NATO despite the current difficulties.
