Kyiv may impose new sanctions against Russia because of Russian passports in Donbas

The Ukrainian authorities intend to respond to the issuance of Russian passports to the residents of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions that are not controlled by Ukraine, said the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Danyliuk, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine. He also did not rule out the imposition of national sanctions.

«There must be specific measures to stop this process or make it as complicated as possible. This is a violation of the Minsk agreements, a planned provocation and we are not going to leave it that way," said Danyliuk, answering the question of whether Ukraine is ready to impose national sanctions for the actions of Russia.

Previously Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council refused to reveal the measures undertaken in response to the decree of the President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on simplifying the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for citizens of the parts of the Donbas not controlled by Ukraine.

On July 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin simplified the procedure of obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Ukrainian citizens who are in the territory of Russia will be able to use this procedure as well.

On April 24, Putin signed a decree on a simplified procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of some regions of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

On May 1, Putin simplified the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for specific categories of Ukrainian citizens.
