Herashchenko: Poroshenko and US representative Volker will discuss the return of Ukrainian prisoners from their captivity in the Donbas

One of the issues for the meeting between President Petro Poroshenko and the United States Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Kurt Volker, will be the issue of the release of Ukrainian hostages in the occupied Donbas, as well as political prisoners in the Russian Federation, as stated by the Ukrainian representative to the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group, Iryna Herashchenko, Ukrinform reports.

"The President of Ukraine is working on all of these issues and I want to assure you that during the meeting between the President and the US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, Mr. Volker, the issue of the hostages’ release, political prisoners of the Kremlin, and hostages in the occupied territories will be one of the priorities," she said.

Herashchenko also noted, "Neither time nor details will be discussed in advance."

On October 27th, Volker will arrive in Ukraine, and after that, perhaps in early November, another meeting will be held with the Prime Minister of Russia, Vladislav Surkov.

On October 26, Russian authorities released the Deputy Chairmen of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiyhoz. The US supported the liberation of Umerov and Chiyhoz. A statement from the US Embassy in Ukraine notes, “The Russian invaders should release the remaining Ukrainian political prisoners now.”
