Fugitive ex-president of Transdniestria is suspected of taking $1 million bribe

Kommersant newspaper reports that among the crimes that the Transdniestria Prosecutor's Office suspects Yevgeny Shevchuk, the former leader of the unrecognized republic, has committed is a bribe "within the bounds of a million dollars." However, no official charges have yet been raised.

The head of the Prosecutor's Office, Anatoly Guretsky, told the publication that the investigation had information from the deposition of a certain businessman. "Shevchuk received [the bribe] from the businessman for solving problems related to the movement of goods across the border," the Prosecutor specified.

Earlier, the Prosecutor’s Office of Transdniestria had reported on five episodes: embezzlement of funds in especially large amounts, non-payment of taxes, smuggling, illegal cuts of 30% of pensions and salaries to state employees, and illegal amnesty of prisoners.
At the end of June, the Parliament of Transdniestria deprived ex-president Shevchuk of immunity.

It was reported that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova is establishing the location of Evgeny Shevchuk. Shevchuk himself wrote on his social media page that he had left Transdniestria, as an attempt was being made against him.
