US Secretary of State calls on EU to abandon Nord Stream 2

US Ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland told journalists during a telephone briefing that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo raised the issue of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline during meetings with the future leadership of the European Union and urged European partners to abandon the project.

According to him, "the energy independence of Europe is a matter of concern to the United States." Washington does not want Moscow to get such an instrument of influence on Europe, especially since Russia has previously used it for pressure”.

Pompeo visited Brussels on September 2-3 and held meetings with four new EU leaders: the new European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, the new High Representative of EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, the next president of the European Council Charles Michel and the new European Parliament president David Sassoli.

The goal of the negotiations with the future leaders of the EU bodies was to establish primary contacts, and not to "delve further into specific issues," said Sondland.
