Mogherini: The EU will not change its policy towards Russia, even if the US does

The EU “will not change its policy towards Russia” even if the US does. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, after an emergency meeting of foreign ministers convened to discuss the outcome of the US election.

“The EU has a very principal position on the annexation of the Crimea and the situation in Ukraine. This position will not change, regardless of possible changes in the positions of other countries, particularly, the United States,” she stated. “At the same time, we will continue a very effective dialogue on Iran and other issues. I would not want our relations with Russia to be viewed simply in black and white,” Mogherini continued.

Mogherini also noted that the EU aims to work closely with the new US administration.

“The foreign ministers expressed their readiness to cooperate closely with the future administration. We have decided to start this work in the first weeks of the transition period in the US,” she said, confirming that the EU “continues to work day and night with the current administration”. She also expressed hope that she will be able to visit the US soon and invite the new Secretary of State to the meeting of the European Council in Brussels.
