Second US aircraft carrier entered the Mediterranean Sea

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier entered the Mediterranean Sea on Monday, as reported by Reuters with reference to US Navy Command.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower will replace the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier who will return later this month after an eight-month deployment to the region.

The Harry S. Truman was recently transferred from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea to “check the Russians,” according to US Rear Admiral Bret Batchelder.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower leads a group of cruisers, destroyers, and aircraft, and will carry out strikes against the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, though the exact details of the carrier’s mission were not disclosed.

The nuclear powered aircraft carrier’s deployment is part of a rotation of US forces to support maritime operations in the region.

The Navy emphasized that the presence of two carrier battle groups in the Mediterranean should give “a strong signal of support to the allies and partners of the USA in Europe."
