Trump invites Ukrainian President Zelensky to visit Washington

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has received an invitation from US President Donald Trump to come to Washington on an official visit, the Ukrainian Presidential Administration announced.

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is grateful to US President Donald Trump for the invitation to make an official visit to Washington,” the administration said in its statement.

“The head of state also emphasizes that the bill ‘To provide support to Ukraine to defend its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity’ that was presented in US Congress’s House of Representatives is an important signal of the two countries’ strong strategic partnership,” the department noted.

According to the Ukrainian news outlet the Mirror Weekly, Zelensky received his invitation from Trump on Friday, 31 May. The visit could take place after Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian and US presidents will engage in “meaningful dialog on resolving the conflict in the Donbas,” and also “on real business projects,” the Mirror Weekly writes.

US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker said previously that talking to Zelensky was on the White House’s agenda, although the format for this was not known.
