Mogherini reminds Russia of its responsibility to implement Minsk Agreements

During a meeting in Munich with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, February 18, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini noted that it is the responsibility of Russia to implement the Minsk Agreements regarding the settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Describing the situation in the Donbas, the head of European diplomacy recalled that the European Union insists on the full implementation of the Minsk agreements. The EU has continued to support, and is ready to give every assistance to the work being done in the "Normandy format" and in the framework of the OSCE, stated Mogherini.

In addition, Mogherini and Lavrov discussed the need to preserve the nuclear deal with Iran, the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict, the situation in Libya, Afghanistan and Syria.

Earlier the same day, after her speech at the Munich Security Conference, Mogherini answered a question posed by the Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko on the possibility of U.S. involvement in the "Normandy format" by saying that sanctions against Russia and formats to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine are secondary with respect to the Minsk agreements.

"I quickly stopped paying attention to the formats, and prefer to look at the results. The priority remains the same: how the European Union can assist with the implementation of the Minsk agreements. We are working with the French, the Germans, the Ukrainian government and our Russian friends on this," she replied.
