Ukraine stopped the supply of electricity to the separatist-held areas of the Donbas

On July 26, the supply of electricity to the territory of the Donetsk region that is not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities was completely suspended, as reported by the head of Ukrenergo, Vsevolod Kovalchuk on his Facebook page.

"Today, the uncontrolled territories no longer consume electricity produced by power plants in the controlled part of Ukraine. The needs of the occupied territories in energy are covered by the Starobeshevska and Zuivska TPPs, by other producers at the uncontrolled territories, as well as by deliveries from the Russian Federation occurring via the power lines that are excluded from the list of interstate ones. Power exchanges through them are not included in the general Ukraine-Russia-Belarus energy system," wrote Kovalchuk.

At the same time, the self-proclaimed DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic) stated that Ukraine halting the supply of electricity would not affect consumers.

"The situation with the cessation of electricity supplied by Kyiv will not affect the consumers of the DPR in any way. The Republic is independent of Ukraine because the electricity generated by two thermal power plants operating on coal extracted from our land is delivered to consumers by high-voltage electric networks located on the territory of the Republic," the Ministry Of Coal And Energy of the DPR stated, DAN news agency reports.

On the eve of April 25, electricity supplies to the territory of the Luhansk region, not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, were stopped. In turn, the LPR stated that they were able to restore energy supply due to supplies from Russia. In Russia, the energy costs for supplying the area controlled by LPR were estimated at 3 billion rubles ($50 million USD) per year.

The continuation of supplies to the uncontrolled territory of the Donetsk region was justified by Ukrenergo with the need to complete the construction of a new power transmission line to Avdiivka, which was completed at the end of April.
